Tata Group to Make Dholera a Global Hub for Semiconductors: Tata Electronics CEO

At the Gujarat SemiConnect Conference 2024, Tata Electronics CEO & MD Randhir Thakur outlined the company’s vision to transform Dholera, Gujarat, into a global epicentre for semiconductor innovation. Joined by officials from Micron, Taiwanese and Japanese partners, and government representatives, the conference emphasised strengthening local supply chains and talent ecosystems.

Earlier this year, the Government of India approved Tata’s ₹91,000 crore semiconductor manufacturing facility in Dholera, in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), Taiwan. Construction is underway, with operations targeted for 2026. This AI-enabled fab will produce up to 50,000 wafers per month, manufacturing chips for automotive, computing, AI, data storage, and wireless communications markets.

Key Highlights from Randhir Thakur’s Address:

  • Three Pillars for Success: Technology, talent, and investment — all equally essential.
  • Local Supply Chain Push: One fab will require ~300 suppliers; over 2,000 ecosystem partners expected.
  • Job Creation: $11 billion investment will generate over 20,000 jobs in Gujarat.
  • Talent Development: Partnerships with IIT Gandhinagar and global experts to create a world-class workforce.
  • Global Confidence: International customers view India and Tata as reliable partners for semiconductor products.

Thakur emphasised that Gujarat’s proactive policies have secured three of India’s four sanctioned semiconductor projects, attracting over 80% of the total national investment in the sector. The Dholera project will also promote local industries, from specialty gases to utilities, creating a self-sustaining, high-tech ecosystem.

"Nobody makes chips alone—it takes a team," said Thakur, highlighting the collaborative roadmap with global partners to position Gujarat, and India, as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
