Tata Electronics signs tech pact with US chip firm for Dholera fabrication plant

Tata Electronics Partners with US Chip Giant Synopsys for $10.9B Dholera Semiconductor Plant

Tata Electronics has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with California-based semiconductor leader Synopsys to collaborate on advanced technology for its upcoming $10.9 billion semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat.

Under this pact, Tata Electronics will leverage Synopsys’ foundry design platform to accelerate the creation of custom semiconductor products for global clients. The collaboration will also span factory automation, data analytics, computer-aided design, technology transfer, and the development of intellectual property for the new fab.

The Dholera plant, approved by the Union Cabinet in February 2024 under India’s Semiconductor and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem Programme, is being developed in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (PSMC). Once operational, it is expected to produce 3 billion chips annually, covering 28nm, 50nm, 55nm, and 90nm nodes — targeting sectors like smart appliances, automobiles, railways, and defence.

Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics, said the alliance will help deliver integrated, resilient electronics manufacturing solutions to customers worldwide. Industry experts see this as a milestone for India’s semiconductor ambitions, moving beyond chip assembly to full-scale manufacturing. However, some caution that semiconductor fabs are complex projects, and delays beyond the projected 2026 completion date would not be unusual.

Synopsys, a Nasdaq-listed giant, posted $1.46 billion in revenue in Q1 2024, and is a key player in the global chip supply chain. Its involvement is expected to enhance the credibility of India’s semiconductor ecosystem and attract major clients to the Dholera facility.
