Tata Begins Employee Training in Taiwan for $11 Billion Gujarat Chip Plant
Tata Electronics has kicked off training programs in Taiwan for its upcoming $11-billion semiconductor fabrication facility in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). Developed in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), the plant is slated to roll out its first chip by the end of 2026.
The initial batch of trainees—Indian nationals already residing in Taiwan—are undergoing hands-on training with PSMC. Starting October, additional batches of employees from India will join the program. The large-scale training initiative will cover thousands of workers, including on-the-job skill upgrades, backed by necessary government approvals.
Approved by the Indian government in February 2024 under the “Make in India, for the World” initiative, the fab will start with 28nm chip production. The AI-enabled plant will have a capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month, catering to sectors such as automotive, computing, data storage, wireless communications, and artificial intelligence.
The venture marks a key milestone in India’s bid for self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing, a sector critical for future technologies. PSMC brings advanced chip-making expertise, while Tata Group contributes its strong IT and manufacturing capabilities. Meanwhile, Taiwan has urged Tata to facilitate direct Air India flights to Taipei to enhance trade and connectivity. Both sides are also finalising plans to send the first batch of Indian workers to Taiwan in early 2025 under a bilateral migration and mobility agreement, potentially paving the way for up to 100,000 Indian hires across multiple sectors.
