Delhi-Mumbai Expressway to be Completed by December: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced that the 1,386-km-long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, being developed at an estimated cost of over ₹1 lakh crore, will be fully operational by December 2023. Once completed, it will reduce travel time between Delhi and Mumbai to just 12 hours.

In an exclusive conversation with Moneycontrol, Gadkari revealed that construction has already been completed up to Vadodara, with the Prime Minister set to inaugurate another stretch extending to Ratlam soon. The expressway is also complete up to Surat, and the tendering for the remaining portion beyond Surat has been divided into 12 packages.

“Work has started on six of these packages, including the Solapur package,” Gadkari said. He added that earlier environmental issues affecting the Surat–Nashik section have now been resolved.

Gadkari also expressed confidence that 70–80% of the work to shorten the Delhi–Chennai route by 320 km will be completed by the end of the year.

The ministry, he noted, is committed to environment-friendly road construction, actively exploring the use of waste plastics and municipal waste in highway projects.
