Gujarat Seeks ₹40,783 Crore Grant for Semiconductor Development in Sanand and Dholera SIR

The Gujarat government has requested ₹40,783 crore from the Union Government to develop a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Sanand and Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) over the next six years.

Key Highlights:
  • Semiconductor Expansion: Of the five semiconductor facilities approved under the Semicon India Programme, four are being established in Gujarat. This includes India’s first commercial semiconductor fab in Dholera SIR by Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. and a chip packaging cluster in Sanand with major projects by Micron Technology, CG Semi, and Kaynes Semicon.
  • Manufacturing Ecosystem: The plan includes development of specialized manufacturing clusters with plug-and-play infrastructure, modern utilities, advanced logistics networks, and comprehensive security systems that meet international standards. This will help create a robust supplier ecosystem to support semiconductor operations.
  • Workforce Development: A key focus is building a skilled workforce through specialized training programs and partnerships with educational institutions to meet the technical demands of semiconductor manufacturing operations.
  • Economic Benefits: The initiative aims to position Gujarat as a major player in global semiconductor supply chains, driving exports, accelerating regional economic growth, and making substantial contributions to the state's GDP through high-value manufacturing.

Mona Khandhar, Principal Secretary of the Science & Technology Department, highlighted that these strategic investments will position Gujarat as a global semiconductor hub, ensuring sustainable long-term growth and reinforcing its role in international trade. The government has formally requested the National Finance Commission and Union Government to sanction the special grants required for this ambitious initiative.
