India Set for Groundbreaking of Three Major Semiconductor Plants Worth ₹1.26 Lakh Crore
India is gearing up for the groundbreaking of three semiconductor manufacturing projects next week, less than a fortnight after the Union Cabinet approved proposals worth $15.14 billion (₹1.26 lakh crore). Two of these projects are from the Tata Group.
The Tata Group’s marquee investment includes the country’s first semiconductor fabrication plant — an $11 billion (₹91,000 crore) facility at Dholera Special Investment Region (Gujarat), in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. The conglomerate is also setting up a ₹27,000 crore chip assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) facility at Morigaon (Assam).
The third project will be established by Murugappa Group’s CG Power at Sanand (Gujarat) — a ₹7,600 crore ATMP unit in collaboration with Japan’s Renesas and Thailand’s Stars Microelectronics. Officials confirmed that Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, top bureaucrats, and industry leaders will attend the ceremonies. Union IT & Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that land allocation and permits are being fast-tracked, with identified land banks ready at all sites.
Collectively, these three projects are expected to create 26,000 direct high-tech jobs and 1 lakh indirect jobs, with the central government providing ₹47,704 crore in subsidies under the ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission.
