Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Nears Completion: Route, Features & Latest Updates

Ahmedabad, March 22, 2024 – The 109-kilometre Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway, a key infrastructure project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, is rapidly taking shape. Developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore, the four-lane (expandable to 8–12 lanes) access-controlled expressway is set to transform connectivity between Ahmedabad, Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), and Bhavnagar.

Currently 70% complete, the project is expected to be operational by August 2024, following delays due to heavy rains in 2023.

Key Highlights

  • Length: 109 km | Cost: ₹3,500 crore | Mode: EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction)
  • Start Point: Sarkhej, Ahmedabad
  • End Point: Adhelai, Bhavnagar
  • Packages:
    • Sardar Patel Ring Road – Sindhrej Village (₹690.30 crore)
    • Sindhrej – Vejalka (₹882 crore)
    • Vejalka – DSIR Zone (₹992 crore)
    • DSIR Zone – Adhelai (₹932.22 crore)
Route & Connectivity

The expressway will link Sardar Patel Ring Road near Sarkhej with Dholera Greenfield International Airport at Navagam, passing through Sindhrej, Vejalka, Dholera SIR, and culminating at Adhelai, Bhavnagar. It is considered the spine of Dholera SIR and will be interconnected with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway for extended national connectivity.

Travel Time & Speed

Travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera will drop from over two hours to just about one hour. Vehicles will be allowed a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

Facilities & Features
  • Truck lay-bys, bus bays, service roads at built-up areas
  • Rest areas, street lighting, and emergency telecom systems
  • Emergency medical aid posts
  • Pedestrian and cattle underpasses to improve safety
  • Extensive roadside tree plantation for greenery and pollution control
Vehicle Access

Similar to other expressways in India, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, bullock carts, and certain slow-moving vehicles will be restricted. Tractors with trolleys carrying agricultural goods may be permitted.

Toll & Revenue

Authorities are expected to announce toll charges closer to completion. Plans indicate two toll plazas—one around 35 km from Ahmedabad and another 35 km from Dholera.

Economic Impact

Once operational, the expressway is expected to boost investments in Dholera SIR, improve logistics efficiency, reduce emissions through smoother traffic flow, and significantly enhance Gujarat’s road infrastructure.
