Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway Nears Completion, Set to Transform Connectivity

The 109-km Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway — a flagship infrastructure project envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — is moving towards rapid completion and is likely to be ready before the August 2024 deadline, well ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Launched in late 2021, the project aims to dramatically cut travel time between Ahmedabad, Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), and Bhavnagar. Initially slated for completion in January 2024, the timeline was delayed due to heavy rainfall in 2023. However, with most land acquisition hurdles resolved and all necessary permissions secured from state and central authorities, construction has accelerated.

Four-Phase Construction

The expressway is being built in four segments:

  • Sanathal (SP Ring Road) to Sindhrej, Dholka Taluka
  • Sindhrej to Vejalka
  • Vejalka to Valinda, Dhandhuka
  • Dholera SIR to Adhelai, Bhavnagar

Project-1, from Sanathal to Sindhrej, is expected to be operational by March 2024. At several locations, nearly 70% of the work is already complete.

High-Speed, Time-Saving Travel

Once finished, the expressway will allow speeds of up to 120 km/h and feature two toll plazas with refreshment facilities — one 35 km from Ahmedabad, and another 35 km further along. The journey from Ahmedabad to Dholera (via Lothal) will take just 45 minutes, while Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar will be cut from 3 hours to about 1 hour 45 minutes, with the distance reduced from 169 km to 141 km.

With this milestone project, Dholera’s accessibility will receive a significant boost, supporting its emergence as a key hub for investment and development in Gujarat.
