Vedanta to Create 1 Lakh Jobs in Gujarat with Japanese Tech Partnerships
Vedanta Group, the Mumbai-based multinational mining and metals giant, is moving forward with its ambitious plan to establish a semiconductor and display fabrication hub in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). The company is exploring strategic collaborations with Japanese technology firms to drive this vision forward.
Speaking at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit roadshow in Japan, Akarsh K. Hebbar, Global Managing Director of Vedanta’s semiconductor and display business, called it a $80 billion opportunity for global companies to invest in India’s emerging electronics manufacturing hub. He highlighted that the project could attract hundreds of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and generate over 1 lakh jobs.
Vedanta aims to anchor Japan’s participation in India’s first dedicated electronics manufacturing hub, building on the company’s existing presence in Japan through its subsidiary, AvanStrate Inc. Last year, Vedanta signed agreements with 30 Japanese technology companies to strengthen India’s semiconductor and glass display manufacturing ecosystem.
Japan, a key Quad partner and one of the top five nations in semiconductor manufacturing—with around 100 fabrication plants—recently signed an agreement with India to jointly develop the semiconductor ecosystem and enhance global supply chain resilience.
Vedanta had earlier partnered with Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn to announce a $19.5 billion investment in a semiconductor wafer fabrication plant in India. Both companies have since decided to independently set up their electronic chip manufacturing plants in the country.
With these developments, Gujarat is poised to become a global hub for advanced electronics manufacturing, boosting India’s position in the high-tech sector while creating massive employment opportunities.
